Free lunch for grade schools?

February 17, 2010 Write a Comment Food, Pilipinas, Promote

All elementary schools within Negros Oriental were allocated with budget from, how I understood it, provincial government officials that will give free lunches to graders for 90 school days. Wow! I’ve been a public school student until secondary school and all I could remember getting was free bulgur that is a not fully-polished cheap grain. Boiled in water and matched with powdered choco to add flavor. And that was in the 90s.

This free lunch is everything from mongo, dried fish, noodles, canned goods with the good old NFA rice. I’m not complaining if that’s everything they could provide! At least it’s FREE and feeds thousands. Something to look forward to for kids in the middle of the day. Parents of these graders does the cooking in shifts.

My mother, who’s a school principal, said that attendance increased, if not perfected, when the free lunch initiative started. Due to the limited options she said that her school barters food, like canned goods, for crops locally grown to add to the menu.

Talks of implementing this throughout the country is on the move. Meaning a national budget will be drafted and finalized. Another possible source of corruption but if it entails stuffing empty stomach for at least once a day for my fellow Filipinos then I’m still not complaining!

Note: Actual photos are taken from Calicanan Elementary School in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

Don Roberto’s Bar and Restaurant (Formerly Rosante)
Location: Downtown Area, Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros

Let’s set expectations first. The service that the crew provides here is not very pleasant. Not what you’d expect from a restaurant. This is still the same crew that was Rosante. That written down let’s go on to the good side of Don Roberto’s Bar and Restaurant which is the food. (Continued…)

Sundays at Golden Cowrie

Golden Cowrie
Golden Cowrie is a native restaurant along Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City. Owned and operated by Cebu Golden Restaurant, Inc.

It’s Sunday and have nothing to look forward to, since I’m missing Batman, but everyone’s hell – Monday! While the wallet hasn’t been emptied by the many wants that you can ever think of, V and I went to Golden Cowrie to have a taste of what the restaurant has to offer. I got myself a regular crispy pata, my first mammalian intake, after I posted an entry about not getting any (Read here). It was manageable and it happened to not taste bitter – how pork meat usually does when done this way. The baked scallops is very cheesy to both our tongues so doused it with a bit of vinegar. Every Filipinos’ favorite dinuguan never failed to inspire Filipino spirit!

We needed to take out the rest of the crispy pata because we later found out that the bottomless digestive organ that we thought we had was totally filed up. No rice scarcity here! (Continued…)

Yes, we take pride in those sumptuous animal meat cooking that our fellow earthlymen find unique but what is really filling up the hungry Filipino stomach? Perhaps, we need an update on the database of what Filipino food really are today. What the less fortunate ones look after too at the end of every kick in the teeth day.

So, what is in the picture?

  • 1 Pritong isda (fried fish)
  • Bahaw (3-meal old rice)
  • Some noodle
  • Suka (vinegar)

I enjoyed this meal. Will you? :|
