Removing Autorun Entries and Processes on Computer

July 28, 2008 Fix

I’ve lost my faith in the plug-n-play stuff! Why? I always get these autorun garbage that always alters the computer’s functionality. It disables the explore ability of flash drives including those of expensive mp3/mp4 players and most may not notice that it actually slows down their computer and their gadget’s life is shortened as well. The enability of showing hidden files and the disappearance Folder Options in explorer is most noticeable. If only antivirus softwares can remove them!

This fix will remove those autorun entries and processes from your computer and gadgets. It’s very simple and I have screen shots to aid. See the screenshots and the how to after the jump.

Open Command Prompt. Type cd\ to go the root drive. Type dir/ah to display hidden files. Type attrib -r -h -s to change the file attributes(r = read-only. h = hidden. s = system file).

HINT: Remove the files in these format(.inf, .exe, .dll, .com) that you think should not be there.

The files are now ready for deletion. I prefer to remove the .inf file first.

The .dll file next.

And the .exe file last

Type cls to clear screen. Type dir/ah again to check if deletion is successful. Do the same thing on your plug-and-play devices including the System32 folder.

Goodluck with your cleaning up! Don’t hesitate to ask and always remember, do not be afraid of what you still don’t know and cherish what you do know. Naks! ;)
